Grab your paints and lets get to work! Pastel paint is more than pretty colors. The Tingology Art Course are an adventure. They’re a dance, with shades and hues. This is a ride you won’t forget if it’s your first time.
Let’s begin with supplies. For starters, you do not need to invest in the best equipment. It’s enough to start with a set of basic soft pastels. Also, paper is a good option. Search for something with a texture. It makes it easier to blend and holds the pastel better.
Imagine yourself holding that pastel. Your hands feel magical, don’t they? Start by drawing broad strokes across your paper. You don’t need to worry about the precision yet. Imagine that you are sketching instead of using graphite.
The fun part is layering. Start by laying a light color base. It’s like setting the stage for a masterpiece. Continue to add more layers. Apply pressure harder or lighter depending on the intensity you want.
Blending is yet another neat trick to learn in pastel painting. You can smudge colors using your fingers, or even a blending tool. It’s almost like mixing up paint, only without the mess. This technique can be used to create soft edges, smooth transitions, and even softer edges.
Texture is important! Occasionally, you’ll want to emphasize those rough lines or bold strokes. Play around with your pastel stick by changing the angle and pressure you apply.
Underpainting is a great way to get creative. This is where you first use one medium like watercolor before adding pastels. This is a great little hack that adds depth to the work.
Do not forget about fixatives. These sprays are used to fixate your pastels so they don’t smudge. Please use sparingly. Too many can dull those vibrant, beautiful colors.
Feeling stuck? Once in a while, break from traditional subjects, such as landscapes or photographs. Experiment by creating abstract forms, or whimsical scenes directly from your imagination.
And mistakes? These mistakes are part of our journey! Artists are bound to have moments where they don’t get it right. This is what helps us grow.
Here’s an interesting story: Once I tried drawing my cat on pastels. He ended up looking more alien than anything. But guess what! Because it was unique, I loved that quirky piece.

Keep in mind that practice makes perfection, or better. Do not let perfectionist pressures creep in. Instead, dedicate some time each and every week for pastel experimentation.
Lastly, and most importantly: have fun. Above all else, art should bring you joy. After all, it is therapeutic.
It’s time to dive into pastel basics.
